Learning in the 21st Century: Taking it Mobile is a Blackboard report based on Project Tomorrow’s Speak Up survey, the largest of its kind survey about student attitudes toward technology in schools. Findings include:
-Access to smartphones has more than tripled among high school students since 2006.
-Students no longer view their school’s internet filters as a primary barrier to using technology at school (it’s the inability to use their own devices that’s slowing them down).
-62 percent of responding parents report that if their child’s school allowed devices to be used for educational purposes, then they’d likely purchase a mobile device for their child.
-Use of mobile devices for productivity, organization, collaboration and learning is highly personal and extremely customizable.
-Administrators agree that top barriers to implementing mobile devices in their schools and districts include the need for focused professional development for teachers and current policies related to network security.
Believe it or not, this survey data is based on feedback from more than 300,000 parents, students, teachers and administrators representing more than 5,000 schools. Now that’s a big survey—but it’s no wonder, as the Speak Up National Research Project, an initiative of Project Tomorrow, is leveraging technology to make it happen.
