Karen Taylor: Innovating to Help Millions Learn Language

HONOREE PROFILE | by Victor Rivero

Karen Taylor is a visionary educator and leader who has helped to improve the careers and lives of more than a million non-native English speakers by teaching more than 10,000 English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) teachers around the world a revolutionary and effective methodology to teach spoken English.

While many successful programs and teachers exist that teach vocabulary and grammar, speaking English in a way that is easy to understand is a challenging last mile problem, and Karen was the first to solve it in 1999 with her patented Color Vowel® System (CV).

Over the last 20 years, Karen has led the growth of CV, and has taught it to ESL programs at esteemed institutions such as Yale, Harvard, and the U.S. Department of State. CV is a brilliant and accessible system that overcomes the barriers to learning new language sounds and rhythms by intentionally activating visual, music, and kinesthetic thought pathways.

Starting in 2016, Karen has led the next phase of CV’s growth as the leader of Blue Canoe’s education team. Blue Canoe is a mobile AI app that is based on CV, and scales it with patent-pending speech recognition and machine learning, creating a virtual AI Teacher. Hundreds of millions of students are now able to improve their spoken English, just by using the Blue Canoe app for 10 minutes a day.

Karen is the Winner of The EdTech Leadership Award in the ‘Visionary’ category, part of The EdTech Awards 2020 from EdTech Digest.
