A free edtech product, ASSISTments that makes it easier for math teachers to assign online and assess student progress, in classroom or remotely. It improves the learning journey by creating an atmosphere designed around feedback, translating formative assessment to skill building and mastery, guiding students with immediate feedback, and giving teachers the time and actionable data to drive every step of their lesson in a meaningful way.
It serves as an enhancement to teachers’ curricula and daily workflows, offering a library of open educational resources, textbooks and custom problem sets; and integrating with a growing number of learning management systems, including Google Classroom and Canvas.
The product is informed by learning science principles, and was developed at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 2003 by husband-and-wife team Neil and Cristina Heffernan. As a professor and computer scientist, Neil Heffernan has received over $50 million in federal and philanthropic funding to support making research-backed impact with ASSISTments. “Our team is constantly innovating and studying cutting edge ideas to make our product better, like crowdsourcing student supports and AI,” says Neil.
Results of a RCT conducted by SRI International and funded by the Institute of Education Sciences showed that students who regularly used ASSISTments scored approximately 75% higher than students whose teachers were not using the program. Students with lower prior achievement experienced an even greater benefit, narrowing the achievement gap. The team believes in equitable outcomes in teaching and learning and are dedicated to demonstrating impact on student achievement in diverse contexts with rigorous research.
