Global CTO & CPO Vishal Gupta on responsible AI, secure-by-design platforms, and what schools should demand next.

As schools accelerate their adoption of AI-powered tools, the stakes around security, privacy, and visibility have never been higher. At the center of that tension sits GoGuardian, a platform trusted by more than 25 million K–12 students and thousands of districts to safeguard learning while supporting teaching and learning at scale.
Vishal Gupta, Global Chief Technology and Product Officer at GoGuardian, brings decades of experience leading large-scale technology, cybersecurity, and product organizations across public and private sectors. In his combined CTO/CPO role, Gupta is responsible for aligning product, engineering, data, AI, and security into a single operating vision—one designed to help schools move faster without increasing risk.

In this conversation, Gupta outlines his non-negotiables for responsible acceleration, what districts should demand from “AI-powered” tools, how GoGuardian is reducing day-to-day friction for educators, and where he believes AI will fundamentally reshape classrooms and school operations in the years ahead.
You stepped into a combined CTO/CPO role at GoGuardian—what are the first ‘non-negotiables’ you’re aligning across product, engineering, security, and data to move faster without increasing risk?
To accelerate progress responsibly, I leverage four core, non-negotiable principles at GoGuardian, drawing on my experience as a CXO four times over.
Deep Customer Relationships: Our first priority is forging deeper relationships with the CIOs and CTOs of key customers. This essential feedback loop informs our prioritization. To formalize this, we establish regional innovation councils and a global customer advisory board.
Talent Development: Moving quickly requires a highly skilled team. We are rolling out a comprehensive, multi-month training program on Agentic AI for nearly our entire product, technology, and security organization to develop advanced talent.
Data and AI Focus: We are increasing investment in Data Engineering, Data Analytics, and Data Science to leverage data and AI for informed decision-making, responsible AI implementation, and actionable insights.
Exceptional Customer Experience: The final non-negotiable is ensuring a world-class customer experience tailored to each user persona, making it a constant area of focus to delight our customers.
GoGuardian sits at the intersection of student safety and teaching/learning. When schools evaluate ‘AI-powered’ tools, what should they demand in terms of transparency, control, and measurable outcomes?
This is a timely and critical topic, as AI presents both a powerful opportunity and significant risk if not managed responsibly. Schools should demand four key elements:
Granular Visibility: Districts need deep, granular visibility into which AI tools are being used, broken down by class, school, and grade, to determine what is sanctioned and what is not.
Compliance and Privacy: It is paramount that AI tools comply with stringent standards like FERPA and COPPA, ensuring they do not compromise sensitive student data.
Control Mechanisms: Schools require robust control over which tools are permitted and the ability to implement any necessary granular policies. Technologies like Proxy solutions can be instrumental here.
Outcomes and ROI: Districts must be able to measure the financial and learning outcomes derived from their software and AI investments to ensure maximum return on investment.

GoGuardian’s technologies, such as Admin and our upcoming product Discover, are specifically designed to address and support each of these critical areas.
From your vantage point, where do schools feel the most day-to-day friction right now—visibility, access, security, or workflow—and how is GoGuardian designing to reduce that burden for educators?
Working with over 25 million K–12 students and 10,000 schools in the US alone, we recognize that friction can manifest in every operational area. While our product suite aims to reduce friction across the board, the most significant opportunities we see are in reducing the burden related to visibility, security, and workflow.
Visibility: We are integrating detailed analytics across all our products, providing schools with deep, actionable insights for better oversight and control.
Security: We are committed to leading the industry by obtaining certifications like ISO 27001, maintaining SOC2 Compliance, running bug bounty programs and penetration testing, and most recently, enabling Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to further secure applications and data.
Workflow: Seamless integration is vital. Through rigorous design thinking and persona-based development, we ensure our applications—such as our new HallPass offering—fit effortlessly into the daily lives of teachers and students, launching directly from our Teacher product to save valuable time.
Security and privacy expectations are rising fast. How are you thinking about ‘secure by design’ at GoGuardian—especially with AI, data retention, and district policy requirements?
Security and privacy are foundational to EdTech, an area I have an extensive background in, including having led Enterprise Cybersecurity and created multiple industry-standard cybersecurity offerings during my tenure at Symantec.
GoGuardian has a deep, institutional commitment to “secure by design,” supported by dedicated security and privacy teams. Our approach includes:
Application and Infrastructure Security: We invest heavily in application security to ensure the code we write is secure, and that the underlying infrastructure and cloud environment are protected.
Validation and Proactive Testing: We utilize multiple tools, including penetration testing, bug bounty programs, and ethical hacking partnerships, to proactively identify and mitigate any potential vulnerabilities.
Responsible AI and Governance: We are firm believers in securing data access, investing in responsible AI development, and have established an AI governance council. We are also among the first companies to pursue the responsible AI certification, ISO 42001.
Policy Adherence: We strictly abide by data retention policies, ensuring the timely and compliant deletion of student data.
Look 2–3 years out: what’s your boldest bet on how AI will reshape the classroom and school operations—and what is GoGuardian building now to be ready for that shift?
My boldest bet is that AI will fundamentally transform how students learn, how that learning is assessed, and how we ensure both their digital and physical safety. This presents a monumental opportunity and a significant challenge, one that GoGuardian is aggressively investing in to lead.

Scaling Talent and Innovation: We are prioritizing talent development to ensure every employee has a chance to master traditional and Agentic AI, enabling us to infuse responsible AI into our products and processes with 20X greater capacity.
Enabling School Control: We are investing in products like GG Admin and the upcoming GG Discover, which will provide schools with the deep visibility and control necessary to manage AI usage within their environments.
Fundamentally, the opportunity with AI is personalization—to tailor learning paths and assessment methods for each student, optimizing their learning experience. Instead of viewing AI as a tool for cheating, we can enable it to help students learn better, test smarter, and develop the critical skills needed for the future.
