Social studies often competes for time in the elementary school day. Teachers may have only a short instructional block—and little time to build rigorous lessons from scratch.
Social Studies Essentials, a new K–5 supplemental program from Discovery Education, was built for that reality. Grounded in the C3 Framework, it provides ready-to-use lessons for exploring history, geography, civics, and economics through primary sources, multimedia, discussion, writing, and hands-on inquiry.
Editable slides, pacing guidance, scaffolds, assessments, and point-of-use teaching notes reduce preparation time and help educators make the most of short instructional blocks. Embedded reading comprehension, vocabulary, discussion, and writing activities also reinforce literacy skills throughout each lesson.
Developed in response to educator feedback, Social Studies Essentials addresses a persistent elementary challenge: making meaningful social studies instruction manageable within a crowded schedule.
Available for the 2026–2027 school year, the program gives teachers a practical way to help young students investigate the world, evaluate evidence, and begin seeing themselves as informed participants in their communities.
